GLOSSARY TERM
  Building Environmental Assessment Method

  DESCRIPTION
Widely referred to as BEAM, this assessment method was established in 1996 by the HK-BEAM steering group (now the BEAM Society), an independent not-for-profit organisation to measure, improve and certify building sustainability. There are separate BEAM standards for new buildings and existing premises: the new building standard covers planning, design, construction, commissioning and refurbishment; the existing building standard focuses on management, operation and maintenance. Assessment under a BEAM standard is voluntary, with buildings being awarded a BEAM certificate and rating of Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum according to overall building performance.
